Oklahoma Lands Blue-Chip LB Jay Schell as First Defensive Commit in 2028 Class

The Oklahoma Sooners just added some serious juice to the 2028 recruiting class. Blue-chip linebacker Jay Schell from Rabun Gap-Nacoochee School in Rabun Gap, Georgia, has committed to OU, telling Rivals’ Hayes Fawcett, “BOOMER SOONER, I’m home!!!”

Schell becomes the first defensive player to commit in the 2028 cycle for Oklahoma, and he’s a high-end one. The 6-foot-3, 215-pound linebacker ranks as a national top-150 prospect and checks in at No. 119 overall, the No. 8 linebacker, and the No. 13 player in Georgia according to Rivals. ESPN goes even higher on him, ranking Schell as the No. 1 linebacker in the entire 2028 class.

Schell had offers from some heavy hitters, including Clemson, Georgia, Georgia Tech, and Texas A&M. Pulling a top linebacker out of Georgia against those programs is no small feat. The Sooners won this one with strong relationships and a clear vision. Primary recruiter Nate Dreiling played a big role in getting it done, and Schell made it clear how he feels about the staff.

“I believe in Oklahoma. I believe in Coach Venables, I believe in Coach Dreiling. It is the best place for me,” he told Rivals’ Chad Simmons. He also told 24/7 Sports, “I felt in my heart I was meant to be a Sooner.”

This wasn’t just about offers or rankings — it was about fit and belief in what Brent Venables is building on the defensive side of the ball.

For a Venables-led program, landing a high-level linebacker early carries extra weight. Venables has always prioritized the linebacker position, and Schell’s size, athleticism, and production potential fit the mold of the physical, aggressive defenders Oklahoma wants.

At 6-3 and 215 pounds as a junior, he already has a strong frame with room to add more good weight. Being ranked as ESPN’s top linebacker in the class shows how highly evaluators think of his upside.

This commitment also gives the 2028 class some balance. Oklahoma has been stacking offensive talent early, so getting the first defensive piece locked in is important. Schell sets a tone for the rest of the cycle on that side of the ball and gives the staff a cornerstone to build around as they continue targeting more defensive prospects.

Rabun Gap-Nacoochee has produced solid talent over the years, and Schell looks like one of their higher-upside players in recent memory. The fact that he felt so strongly about Oklahoma after going through the process with multiple SEC and ACC programs speaks to the recruiting job done by Dreiling and the rest of the staff.
