During the busy transfer-portal season, it’s easy to forget that high-schoolers are still being recruited and committing, too.
Oklahoma picked up a pair of preps commitments on Saturday as linebacker Taven Epps and defensive tackle Deven Robertson both pledged to play for the Sooners.
Epps is a four-star linebacker from Tustin, California, in Orange County. He’s rated as the fifth best linebacker recruit in the Class of 2027, the 10th best prospect from the Golden State and the No. 79 recruit in the class overall, per 247Sports’ rankings. Epps had previously been committed to Texas, but flipped during the Navy All-American Bowl on Saturday.
Robertson isn’t quite as highly touted, but his size yields plenty of curiosity. He’s a 6-foot, 320-pound interior lineman from Hattiesburg, Mississippi, where he’s ranked as the No. 11 recruit in the state, according to 247Sports. Robertson had been projected to choose Oklahoma for the last few weeks.
Epps and Robertson are the 12th and 13th recruits coach Brent Venables has landed in the 2027 Class. Oklahoma ranks first in FBS with that class so far, which holds two five-star recruits and five four-stars. No other school has more than commits in the class and Oklahoma is tied for first in five-star landings along with Ohio State and Texas Tech.
