The Sooners’ QB could be set for a major bounce back this fall.

Oklahoma Sooners quarterback John Mateer is the most overlooked quarterback in college football heading into the 2026 season. If there’s one signal-caller capable of shocking everyone by winning the Heisman Trophy and ascending to first-round pick status in the 2027 NFL Draft, it’s the Sooners’ gunslinger, who everyone seems to have forgotten about.

It feels like a lifetime ago when Mateer was the Heisman frontrunner through the first month of the 2025 season. The way he played against Michigan had the college football world buzzing, and Oklahoma was building legitimate momentum as a threat for the SEC Championship game. Then everything fell apart.

Mateer’s thumb injury impacted everything

Mateer suffered a thumb injury against Auburn, and it completely derailed his season. The statistical split tells the full story. In his first four games, Mateer completed 67.4% of his passes, averaged 303 passing yards per game, and posted a 6-3 touchdown-to-interception ratio. After the injury, those numbers collapsed to a 59.4% completion percentage, only 208 passing yards per game, and an 8-8 touchdown-to-interception ratio.

The accuracy issues were glaring, and the ensuing confidence problems made things worse. Bad decisions crept into his game as he tried to compensate for a thumb that clearly wasn’t right. Ultimately, he should rebound from a problem that would mess with the head of any quarterback.

Why 2026 will be different

Now that Mateer has had a full offseason to recover, the opportunity in front of him is massive. Oklahoma returns a far more experienced offensive line, arguably the most experienced group Brent Venables has had since taking over the program. That alone should provide Mateer with the kind of protection and consistency he lacked down the stretch last season.

On top of that, Mateer has one of the best receivers in the SEC at his disposal in Isaiah Sategna III. The combination of a healthier arm, better protection, and elite pass-catching talent could all help vault Mateer back into the national conversation.

Why Mateer could be a 2027 NFL Draft riser

The 2027 NFL Draft quarterback class is still taking shape, and a monster 2026 season from Mateer could launch him into first-round consideration. He showed what he’s capable of when healthy during those first four games, and the statistical production was legitimately impressive.

Hopefully, the offseason has supplied Mateer with enough time to move on from his shaky 2025. With discussions revolving around his improved mechanics, it appears he’s taking the necessary steps to be an elite passer this year.

One thing is for sure: Oklahoma’s quarterback is one of the most compelling storylines heading into the 2026 college football season. If those first four games of 2025 were the real version of who he is, the rest of college football should be paying attention.
