Oklahoma's fans deserve an assist on the Sooners' third-quarter touchdown against New Mexico on Saturday night.

Quarterback John Mateer found Isaiah Sategna III behind the Lobos' secondary for a 53-yard touchdown with 8:05 left in the quarter. That score ended up being the final points of the game as No. 24 Oklahoma hung on for a 14-6 win.

In his postgame news conference, Mateer said that he initially didn't see Sategna on the play. But when the crowd at Memorial Stadium got louder, he knew someone had to be open.

"I was late to it, I looked left and I kind of skipped over to the third read and I kind of heard everybody screaming and I was like, 'well, something must be going on' and Isaiah puts his hand up — I'm serious — he puts his hand up and I see him," Mateer said.

If you have sound on, you can hear the crowd get louder and louder in the video below as Mateer scans the field.

The win gave Oklahoma some breathing room against a team that entered as a 23.5-point underdog. The Sooners turned the ball over three times in a second straight rough outing. After scoring 10 points in a 17-10 loss to Michigan in Week 2, Oklahoma had 299 total yards and just 61 rushing yards on 32 attempts in Week 3.

Mateer threw an interception on his first pass of the game and then threw a pick on Oklahoma's fifth possession while the Sooners were leading 7-3. Mateer finished the game 19-of-25 passing for 238 yards and two TD passes to go along with those two interceptions.

"I was like, ‘alright, next play, make a play,’" Mateer said of his mindset after the first interception. "And then it happens again. I throw another one. And I'm like, 'you've got to be kidding me.' And I need to be better at the game of football but I knew I just can't give in. I'm not going to tap out, I'm not going to give up on my guys. And they're not going to give up on me.

"And my teammates have done a great job and I appreciate them more than they know saying they have my back. I'm getting tired of them saying that they have my back because they're only saying it because I keep making mistakes, you know? And one day it's going to stop."

It'll be a big boost for Oklahoma if that one day comes in Week 4. Oklahoma travels to play Georgia next Saturday as the Bulldogs look like a machine. No. 2 Georgia throttled Arkansas 45-17 in its lowest-scoring game of the season in Week 3.
