Oklahoma Sooners a consistent offense from being a perennial contender

The Oklahoma Sooners re-established themselves last season as one of the best programs in the country. The Sooners went 10-3 and returned to the College Football Playoff for the first time since 2019.

This marked a major milestone for head coach Brent Venables, as there were major questions heading into last season over whether he was the guy who could lead the program back to being a contender. He answered those, but now has to answer if he's the guy who can lead Oklahoma back to the top.

Film expert Brooks Austin revealed how Venables can keep the Sooners as a perennial College Football Playoff contender.

"I think you guys are in that perennial playoff contention standpoint," Austin said on 'The Oklahoma Breakdown with Ikard and Lehman.' "Again, as long as there is offensive pulse and consistent offensive pulse. It can't be ups and downs all year, and you have to stay healthy, obviously, at the quarterback position. But that's where I have you guys in that 10-2 range for sure."

Austin's comments highlight the biggest variable for Oklahoma heading into the season. The defense has established itself as one of the best units in the country, giving the Sooners a strong foundation.

The offense, however, needs to provide consistency. Oklahoma doesn't necessarily need to field the nation's highest-scoring offense, but it cannot afford the prolonged stretches of inconsistency that have held the team back in the past. Keeping John Mateer healthy and getting reliable production from the offense could be the difference between another playoff appearance and a deeper postseason run.
