The Oklahoma Sooners are out recruiting the Texas Longhorns in the state of Texas.
The Oklahoma Sooners are winning the recruiting battle in Texas against Texas, and it’s not particularly close.
Both OU and Texas have one recruit in the state’s top 10, but the Sooners also hold a commitment from Keldred Ben, the No. 12 overall recruit in the state. Not to mention, Texas A&M and Texas Tech have more top recruits in the state than Texas as well. And that’s kind of embarrassing. They are supposed to be the brand, and Texas is considered the best state for recruiting.
According to On3 and Rivals projections, Landon Williams-Callis, the No. 8 player in Texas and a 5’8 running back, is expected to choose Texas A&M over the Longhorns.
That would be another blow to Texas’ recruiting effort, which has struggled to lock down the state’s best talent this cycle. Texas Tech has approximately six recruits inside the state’s top 10, and Texas A&M has two. Texas is being outworked within its own borders.
OU holds the No. 1 class nationally
The bigger picture tells an even clearer story. Oklahoma holds the No. 1 recruiting class in the 2027 cycle across all three major recruiting services. Texas sits around No. 10 nationally. That’s not a bad class by any means, but the Sooners are clearing the Longhorns by a wide margin.
OU’s dominance on the trail has been a theme all cycle long. The staff has prioritized elite talent from coast to coast, and the Texas pipeline has been a significant part of that strategy. Landing top-tier players from the Lone Star State while the Longhorns sit on the outside looking in only adds fuel to the rivalry.
The on-field results have to keep up
Recruiting rankings only matter if the production follows on the field. Oklahoma has lost to Texas two straight years in the Red River Rivalry, and that stings regardless of what the class rankings say. However, the Sooners had the better 2025 season overall, making the College Football Playoff while Texas did not. The year before that, the roles were reversed, with Texas reaching the CFP and Oklahoma staying home.
The two programs are trading punches right now, both on the field and on the recruiting trail. OU has the edge in the 2027 class and came out ahead in 2025. Texas had the upper hand in 2024. The rivalry is alive and well, and neither side can afford to take a step back.
The 2026 season could go either way. Both teams are talented, both have high expectations, and the Red River Rivalry game should be one of the best matchups of the fall. When it comes to recruiting, the Sooners are making a clear statement – and right now, the Longhorns are chasing them.
