The Oklahoma Sooners have landed a prediction from Sam Spiegelman of Rivals to land 2028 running back Jayshawn Mitchell

The Oklahoma Sooners could be on the verge of a significant 2028 recruiting win. National recruiting analyst Sam Spiegelman of Rivals has placed a 65% prediction for four-star running back Jayshawn Mitchell to land in Norman.

Mitchell, a 5’11, 200-pound back out of William J. Brennan High School in San Antonio, Texas, is a top-150 player nationally, the No. 10 running back in the country, and the No. 20 player in Texas. Oklahoma’s 2028 recruiting class needs momentum, and Mitchell could be the catalyst.

Mitchell’s recruitment includes Oklahoma’s biggest rival

Mitchell holds offers from Oklahoma, Texas, SMU, Ohio State, and Texas Tech. He has taken two visits to OU, compared to one apiece for the other four schools. That visit count matters. Landing Mitchell would represent a direct win over the Texas Longhorns, and in recruiting, those head-to-head battles carry weight beyond just the individual player.

Both Oklahoma and Texas currently have thin 2028 classes. The Sooners have only four-star quarterback Trey Tagliaferri committed, while the Longhorns have four-star quarterback Neimann Lawrence. Neither program has a position player locked in yet, which makes Mitchell’s decision all the more significant for both sides.

Where things stand with Oklahoma’s 2028 running back board

The Sooners have sent offers to 10 running backs in the 2028 class. Beyond Mitchell, only two others appear to be realistic targets at this point. Four-star running back Zachary Baillyou is a battle where Georgia currently holds the edge. Former Oklahoma commit Micah Rhodes, who originally committed when DeMarco Murray served as the Sooners’ running back coach, decommitted after Murray left for the Kansas City Chiefs.

Rhodes is now expected to land with Texas, though Oklahoma appears to be his second choice. That context makes the Spiegelman prediction for Mitchell even more important. If Oklahoma can’t close on Baillyou or Rhodes, Mitchell becomes the primary target at the position.

Dylan McCullough’s early recruiting efforts show promise

There is still plenty of time before National Signing Day for the 2028 class, but getting commitments early creates a snowball effect. Once a player like Mitchell commits, it can generate momentum that draws other recruits toward the program. Oklahoma’s new running back coach, Deland McCullough, appears to be doing solid work on the trail so far.

The Sooners need to get their 2028 class rolling beyond a single quarterback commitment. A top-150 player choosing Oklahoma over Texas, Ohio State, and SMU would send a strong message about where the program is headed. For now, Spiegelman’s prediction sits at 65%, and Oklahoma’s two visits from Mitchell give them a tangible edge in the race.
