The Oklahoma Sooners have one of the hardest schedules in the country, and ESPN is just proving it. That could end up being their pitch to the College Football Playoff committee.

The Oklahoma Sooners will face one of the most grueling slates in the country this fall, ranking second in ESPN’s Football Power Index for schedule difficulty behind only the Arkansas Razorbacks.

For the second consecutive season, Oklahoma lands among the top five in the toughest schedules nationally, and the 2026 gauntlet could determine whether Brent Venables and his team earn a College Football Playoff berth.

The Sooners open against UTEP at home, a manageable start against a program that has been trending upward. After that, the schedule turns unforgiving in a hurry. Oklahoma travels to Michigan, plays at Georgia, visits Florida, and hosts matchups against Ole Miss, Texas A&M, South Carolina, Texas, and Mississippi State.

Several of those opponents could legitimately be college football playoff contenders if things break right for them. That kind of lineup leaves almost no margin for error week to week.

Sooners and Longhorns share the pain this time around

One notable detail from the FPI rankings: the Texas Longhorns, Oklahoma’s biggest rival, check in with the third-hardest schedule in 2026. That matters because last season Texas had a noticeably easier path than the Sooners did. This year, the gap between the two rivals’ schedules is much smaller. Both programs will be battle-tested by the time they meet, and neither can lean on a soft stretch of games to pad the record.

The overlap extends well beyond the Red River rivalry, too. Kentucky, Ole Miss, Mississippi State, Florida, Texas A&M, South Carolina, Missouri, Georgia, and Michigan all appear inside the top 20 for schedule difficulty. When that many of your opponents are dealing with equally demanding slates, the quality of competition across the SEC only compounds. Every conference game carries playoff-caliber weight.

Depth and health will determine Oklahoma’s ceiling

Venables has proven he can get his team ready to compete on a weekly basis regardless of opponent. That consistency is baked into the program at this point. The bigger concern is durability. Oklahoma has dealt with significant injury issues in recent seasons, and a schedule this demanding makes depth across the roster even more critical. If the Sooners can’t stay healthy through the meat of the SEC slate, even a talented roster could hit a wall.

The flip side, though, is where this schedule becomes a potential advantage. A team that survives a gauntlet like this one builds an undeniable résumé. When the college football playoff selection committee evaluates the field at the end of the year, strength of schedule carries real weight. Oklahoma won’t need to rely on style points or hope for chaos elsewhere. If the Sooners stack wins against this caliber of opponent, their case makes itself.

The 2026 season will test Oklahoma’s roster, coaching staff, and ability to handle adversity over four months of elite competition. That challenge is real. But so is the reward waiting on the other side.
