Oklahoma Sooners defense the talk of SEC media days

The Oklahoma Sooners have fully embraced the identity of head coach Brent Venables, building a program centered around physical, aggressive defense. Oklahoma has developed into one of the nation's premier defensive teams, consistently creating confusion and disruption for opposing offenses.
The 2025 season marked the strongest defensive performance of the Venables era. The Sooners ranked among the nation's best defensively, finishing No. 6 in total defense, No. 32 in passing yards allowed, No. 3 in rushing yards allowed and No. 7 in scoring defense. That dominant defensive effort helped Oklahoma earn its first College Football Playoff berth under Venables.
Oklahoma's defense has not only earned national recognition but also drawn praise from opposing players during SEC media days. Florida Gators linebacker Myles Graham was among those asked about Oklahoma's defense during media availability. Graham praised the creativity and complexity of Venables' defensive scheme.
"I just love watching football," Graham said via OU Nightly. "I love playing it, and I love watching it. I think it's deep and very creative. Like they have a lot of different looks. They do a whole lot on the back end and the front end. So just seeing that, it's just you can appreciate good football"
Oklahoma's defense has become the foundation of Venables' program. After leading the Sooners back to the College Football Playoff last season, the unit is now earning recognition from opponents throughout the SEC for its creativity and versatility.
If Oklahoma can pair another elite defensive performance with offensive improvement in 2026, the Sooners will once again be positioned to compete for both an SEC championship and a national title.
