Oklahoma State Didn't Land Drew Mestemaker With Money Alone

When Oklahoma State landed Drew Mestemaker in the transfer portal, many people assumed they knew why.
Money.
After all, the reigning American Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Year could have commanded interest from some of college football's biggest brands.
According to CBS Sports, there was much more behind his decision than simply chasing the biggest NIL offer.
In fact, I think that's the biggest takeaway.
Yes, Oklahoma State had the resources to compete, but it wasn't the Cowboys' biggest advantage.
Eric Morris was.
Mestemaker has consistently said throughout the offseason that Morris is the coach he trusts with his career.
That shouldn't surprise anyone.
Morris recruited him to North Texas when few others believed in him.
He developed him into the nation's passing leader.
After one breakout season, he gave Mestemaker the opportunity to prove himself on a Power Four stage.
That's a relationship money can't create overnight.
Could Mestemaker have gone to a traditional powerhouse?
Probably.
Blue-blood logos don't guarantee success.
Quarterbacks transfer every year looking for the biggest name, only to find themselves battling crowded depth charts or learning entirely new systems.
At Oklahoma State, Mestemaker found something different.
He found continuity.
He already knows Morris' offense.
He already has chemistry with teammates like Caleb Hawkins and Wyatt Young who made the move from North Texas.
Instead of starting over, he's building on what already worked.
That's a huge advantage entering the season.
There's another reason I think Oklahoma State won this recruitment.
Opportunity.
The Cowboys aren't asking Mestemaker to compete for a starting job.
They're handing him the keys to the offense.
He's expected to lead one of the biggest rebuilds in college football, and Morris has built the roster around his quarterback's strengths.
That's a rare level of trust and trust is difficult to put a dollar value on.
This story also says something bigger about college football today.
NIL absolutely matters.
Programs need resources to compete, but relationships still matter, too.
Development matters.
Fit matters.
Believing in the coach calling the plays matters.
I think Oklahoma State checked every one of those boxes.
That's why I've never viewed Mestemaker's transfer as simply an NIL story.
It's a coaching story.
It's a culture story.
It's a reminder that while money may open the door, it doesn't always determine where players walk through it.
If Oklahoma State has the season many fans expect, people will inevitably point to NIL.
I think they'll be missing the bigger picture.
The Cowboys didn't just invest in Drew Mestemaker.
Drew Mestemaker invested in Eric Morris.
