Oklahoma State's new Triplets channeled the school's original trio in Saturday's win at West Virginia.
Three transfers from North Texas – quarterback Drew Mestemaker, running back Caleb Hawkins and receiver Wyatt Young – were nearly unstoppable in Oklahoma State's 41-24 win over the Mountaineers.
Mestemaker passed for 389 yards three touchdowns, Young had eight catches for 192 yards and a score and Hawkins had 31 carries for 180 yards and a touchdown.
The explosion from those three positions was reminiscent of the Oklahoma State combination with that moniker that electrified college football in 1987 — quarterback Mike Gundy, running back Thurman Thomas and receiver Hart Lee Dykes.

The new trio's success is not a suprise. Last season, Mestemaker led the nation with 4,379 yards passing last season as a freshman. Hawkins ran for 1,434 yards and 25 touchdowns and set an FBS record for freshmen with 29 total touchdowns. Young had 70 catches for 1,264 yards and 10 touchdowns.
They made the move to Oklahoma State along with head coach Chad Morris expecting to put up the kind of numbers they did last year when North Texas spent much of the season in the College Football Playoff conversation.

Now that Mestemaker, Hawkins and Young are duplicating their past success, the Cowboys could move into the AP Top 25. They stumbled in their opener against Tulsa before shocking a top-10 ranked Oregon squad and rolling past Murray State. Oklahoma State was 30th in votes in the most recent poll.
For the record, West Virginia didn't fare much better against the original Triplets, who were given their name by then-Oklahoma State coach Pat Jones. In the 1987 Sun Bowl, Thomas ran for 157 yards and four touchdowns, Gundy passed for 161 yards on just 18 attempts and Dykes caught three passes for 72 yards in Oklahoma State's 35-33 win over the Mountaineers on a snowy day in El Paso, Texas.
