Oklahoma tight end Kaden Helms plans to enter the NCAA Transfer Portal, per On3’s Hayes Fawcett. Helms has one year of eligibility remaining.
Helms made nine appearances this season. He recorded a career-high five catches for 35 yards and a touchdown.
Helms only played in three games during his freshman season and ultimately redshirted. The 6-foot-5 TE missed the following season due to injury. Helms played in eight games in the 2024 campaign, but primarily served on special teams.
In total, Helms recorded eight catches for 58 yards and two touchdowns during his time at Oklahoma. Helms played high school football at Bellevue West (NE), where he was a four-star prospect. He was the No. 242 overall player and No. 10 tight end in the 2022 recruiting cycle, according to the Rivals Industry Rankings.
While Helms rarely saw extended action for Oklahoma, he had impressive flashes. Earlier this season, Sooners offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle raved about the veteran pass-catcher.
“Straining through the whistle, being physical, being violent and doing that at practice and taking it to the game, and Kaden exemplifies that,” Arbuckle said. “He’s come in since his hand got better, been a willing practice guy out there.
“Really been a — almost a standard of what you need to be at practice. And I think it’s translated to gameday really well. And I’m really proud of him. I’m just proud of the football that he’s playing and the amount of football he’s getting to play, because I know that means a lot to him, just ’cause he’s been hurt a lot throughout his career. So it’s just really fun to see for him.”
Kaden Helms is the fifth Oklahoma player to announce his intent to enter the transfer portal this offseason. Oklahoma also suffered significant roster losses last offseason, with 37 of its players entering the portal.
Oklahoma didn’t allow its losses to slow it down. The Sooners posted a 10-2 regular-season record this year and appeared in the College Football Playoff for the first time under head coach Brent Venables. The team fell 34-24 to Alabama on Saturday, but Venables couldn’t have been more thankful for this season.
“Easily one of the funnest teams I’ve ever been around, the spirit of this team, their love to compete, their love again for their brothers, their willingness to allow us to coach them day in and day out—what a joy that they’ve been,” Venables said. “Our best days are sitting in front of us. I really believe that.”
