The Oklahoma Sooners' chase for their eighth national championship in school history gets underway on Friday night when they take on the UTEP Miners. The Sooners are one of the winningest teams in college football, with the most conference championships all-time. They're coming off of their best season of the Brent Venables era and the second 10-win season with Venables in Norman.
The Oklahoma Sooners are hoping to build off of their 2025 success with another trip to the College Football Playoff in 2026. It's a retooled team with a loaded defense and a veteran quarterback. Led by John Mateer, the offense should take a significant step forward, including an improved rushing attack.
The defense brings back a ton of experience, with multi-year starters at every level. David Stone and Taylor Wein will be instrumental for the Sooners' defensive line. Kip Lewis and Owen Heinecke are stars at linebacker. Peyton Bowen, Eli Bowen, and Courtland Guillory return to make up one of the best defensive back groups in college football.
In their Friday night season opener, the Oklahoma Sooners take on a UTEP Miners team that's won just five games in the last two seasons. They have a new starting quarterback, E.J. Colson. Colson started his career at UCF in 2024 before playing for Incarnate Word in 2025.
The Oklahoma Sooners have a chance to contend for a championship in 2026, but have some questions that need answering.
