Since Brent Venables became head coach of the Oklahoma Sooners in 2022, his team and Lane Kiffin’s team have faced each other twice.
As of now, Kiffin has a record of 2-0 in those games, including a 34-26 victory this year in Norman. However, the situation has changed as Kiffin has left Oxford, Mississippi, to become the head coach of the LSU Tigers. The two are already connected again, as they are competing for one of the top safeties in the 2027 recruiting class.
Rivals recruiting expert Steve Wiltfong reports that Oklahoma holds an advantage over Kiffin for safety Jaylen Scott as he aims to return LSU to the College Football Playoff for the first time since 2019.
Wiltfong has predicted that Oklahoma will secure a commitment from the Mobile, Alabama native. Scott is a 6-foot, 160-pound safety who was initially committed to the Auburn Tigers. Oklahoma has a 95.2% advantage over other teams. Scott has released a final list of five schools: Florida State, Miami, Georgia, Oklahoma and Tennessee. However, this list was made before LSU extended an offer, which he referred to as his “dream school.”
Beyond blessed to receive an offer from my dream school!! @Chris_Kiffin@LSUfootball@AC_BIG12AU@coachcook55@adamgorney@TomLoy247@helmet2helmt251@HallTechSports1@WHYNOTWHS@BenThomasPreps@ScoutFballpic.twitter.com/3bqdVy1W63

If the prediction from Wiltfong ultimately proves correct, Oklahoma would secure one of the most intriguing defensive backs in the 2027 recruiting class. Scott has drawn significant national attention for his speed, coverage instincts and ability to track the football in the air.
Since his decommitment, several major programs have pushed hard to bring him into their defensive backfields. His previously released top five included some of the best programs in the land.
However, the situation has evolved since that list was released. LSU entered the race after extending an offer from Kiffin’s staff. Even so, Oklahoma currently holds a significant advantage according to recruiting projections.
If the Sooners can close the deal, Scott could become a key piece of Oklahoma’s future secondary as the program continues building a defense capable of competing at the highest level of college football.
