Former Oklahoma offensive lineman Febechi Nwaiwu was named the recipient of the Pat Tillman Award this week at the East-West Shrine Bowl.
The award honors intelligence, sportsmanship and service. The Shrine Bowl will be played Tuesday night.
“Febechi embodies everything this honor stands for and its connection to an incredible philanthropic cause such as Shriner’s Children’s,” West team coach Lunda Wells said in the statement. “He approaches the game the right way, leads by example, and earns respect through his work ethic and humility. He is truly deserving of this recognition.”
Tillman played in the 1998 Shrine Bowl and in the NFL before joining the military after the September 11 attacks. He died in 2004 while serving in Afghanistan.
Nwaiwu started his career at North Texas as a walk-on. He transferred to Oklahoma two seasons ago and spent the last two years as a starter on the Sooners' offensive line.
Four former OU players will play in Tuesday night's game, which serves as an all-star game of sorts for players who have exhausted collegiate eligibility or have declared early for the NFL Draft. Besides Nwaiwu, ex-Sooners Jaren Kanak (tight end), Robert Spears-Jennings (safety) and Marvin Jones (linebacker) will also participate. Jones is on the East team while the other three will play for the West.
Oklahoma finished the 2025 season 10-3, losing to Alabama in the first round of the College Football Playoff.
