When the Michigan Wolverines built a championship offense during their dominant stretch from 2021-23, the offensive line was the anchor. Football is won in the trenches, and without strong line play, everything else on the offense usually crumbles.
Michigan had a decent offensive line last year, but it needs to be even better to get back to contending in the Big Ten. New talent will need to step up this season, and a new starter might end up being Nathan Efobi.
The story so far
Efobi came to Michigan from SEC country, as he attended South Forsyth High School in Cumming, Georgia before heading to Ann Arbor. He was a four-star recruit in the 2023 recruiting class, and he committed to the Wolverines over programs like Georgia, Miami, Penn State and more.
While he didn’t see game action during his freshman season, Efobi did get to experience Michigan’s national championship run. The Wolverines had a dominant offensive line that season that carried the team all the way to the top, and being able to spend a season with that group had to be beneficial for Efobi’s development.
In 2024, Efobi made his Michigan debut, appearing in six games that season. He mostly played on special teams, but he did get some time at left guard against Arkansas State early in the season. He took on a bigger role last season, as he got five starts along the offensive line. However, there were six games where he did not see action. There is a good chance that will be changing during the 2026 season.
Outlook for 2026
Efobi appears to have a solid chance at starting at one of the guard spots this year. He did get the start at left guard for the Maize team during the spring game, and even if he doesn’t earn a starting job right, he will have a much bigger role this season with a chance to work his way to the top of the depth chart. He will likely be battling with guys like Evan Link and Brady Norton for playing time.
The offensive line is where the offense lives and dies. If Michigan can get back to its punishing ways in the trenches, it should have a good shot to compete for the Big Ten title and more. Efobi will be a piece to that puzzle, and his chance to become a key member of this offense is right in front of him.
