Ole Miss has made an improbable run to the College Football Playoff semifinals, dispatching SEC foe Georgia in the Sugar Bowl on New Year’s Day. They’ve reached this stage without coach Lane Kiffin, who bolted for the LSU job in late November.
While Rebels fans reveled in the moment Thursday night, they made sure to poke some fun at Kiffin as the clock ticked down to zero. The ESPN broadcast caught a chant of “[Expletive] Lane Kiffin” reverberating throughout Caesars Superdome as officials checked the monitor. Kiffin had the last laugh, though, as Ole Miss’ upset win will pay him $500,000 in bonuses — with LSU footing the bill.
Kiffin brought quarterback Trinidad Chambliss to Ole Miss, and he was exceptional in the Rebels’ victory. The former Division II star completed 30 of 46 passes for 362 yards and two touchdowns to lead Ole Miss to the semifinals. Miami awaits Ole Miss in that round, a daunting task as the Hurricanes upset reigning champion Ohio State in the Cotton Bowl.
