OXFORD — Ole Miss football has added a familiar face in the quarterback room.
Former LSU and Ole Miss quarterback Walker Howard is transferring back to Ole Miss after one season at Louisiana, per a report from On3 on Jan. 14.
Howard was a high-profile prospect in the 2022 class. He was a four-star prospect in the 247Sports Composite who chose LSU. Howard transferred to Ole Miss for two seasons. He was the third-stringer behind Jaxson Dart and Austin Simmons in 2024. He played in four total games for the Rebels.
Howard transferred to Louisiana in 2025, but tore his oblique in Week 1 and missed most of the season for the Ragin’ Cajuns. He returned to play in five games in a limited capacity. He finished 18-for-41 for 155 yards, one touchdown and three interceptions.
Howard will be a redshirt senior at Ole Miss. He’s a solid pickup for coach Pete Golding and the Rebels, considering the state of the quarterback room.
Trinidad Chambliss will return for another season if he wins his eligibility case that is headed to Mississippi courts. Ole Miss is also appealing the NCAA’s denial of the additional season.
If Chambliss can’t return, and with 2025 backup Austin Simmons transferring to Missouri, Ole Miss will have a new quarterback in 2026. Auburn transfer Deuce Knight was a splashy addition. Knight has four years of eligibility remaining and flashed major potential in limited action in 2025 as a freshman.
Howard will be, at a minimum, a solid depth piece who has experience. AJ Maddox and Maealiuaki Smith are other scholarship players who make up the room.
