Ole Miss ranks sixth in CFP, here are the updated odds for the Rebels

The College Football Playoff selection committee has revealed its first edition of rankings, and Ole Miss landed at number six overall decidedly in the precious top 12 for now.

The No. 6 Rebels (8-1, 5-1 SEC) have a weekend tilt against The Citadel, a home game against Florida next week and a season finale in Starkville for the Egg Bowl left. All of the analytics are pointing toward Ole Miss having a better than most chance at making the playoff for its first time, but if the season ended today, it would be a home game in Oxford against the No. 14 Virginia Cavaliers (8-1, 5-0 ACC).

Our very good friends over at FanDuel Sportsbook have updated odds on the Ole Miss Rebels and its chances to make the CFP. Currently, the Rebels are -1200 to make the top 12 while it is a +680 to NOT make the CFP. May the odds be forever in Lane Kiffin’s favor imo.

Now UVA is ranked outside the top 12, but the Cavaliers are the de facto ACC Champion in this projected bracket. Winning the first game in Oxford would be a possible SEC showdown against No. 3 Texas A&M. Here’s how the top 12 seeds (not rankings) shook out.

  • No. 1 Ohio State
  • No. 2 Indiana
  • No. 3 Texas A&M
  • No. 4 Alabama
  • No. 5 Georgia
  • No. 6 Ole Miss
  • No. 7 BYU
  • No. 8 Texas Tech
  • No. 9 Oregon
  • No. 10 Notre Dame
  • No. 11 Virginia
  • No. 12 Memphis

Good gravy and biscuits, the last team I want to see in this bracket anywhere close to playing Ole Miss is the Memphis Tigers. That is one of those programs who just seem to give the Rebels its best effort historically, and it would just be a miserable week leading up or potentially after if you live anywhere in the Memphis metro area.

Now some of these rankings are going to change, no doubt about it. Conference championship games could loom enormous for the top four seeds if they make it that far. Ole Miss is in a great spot in terms of win and you’re in, but its not likely to be in the cards to play for a conference championship without some significant help.

Three games to go. 1-0 every week. All the cliches at this point but the Rebels are in very serious contention now for a playoff home game leading up to the week of Christmas.
