Ole Miss's Pete Golding weighs in on LSU football coaching controversy

Ole Miss head coach Pete Golding has offered an update on the coaching controversy involving LSU football's offensive staff. Ole Miss’s Athletic Director, Keith Carter, partially addressed those concerns after the Rebels’ win in the Sugar Bowl Thursday night. When asked whether the coaches would remain with the team for the rest of Ole Miss’ playoff run, Carter said, “I don’t know. We’re going to celebrate tonight and get ready for Arizona in the morning."

The team’s new head coach, Pete Golding, answered that very same question Saturday morning.

“They have every opportunity like they have up to this point to be able to make that decision,” Golding explained. “So, week in and week out, I don’t dictate whether they do that or not because they’re not employed by me. Up to this point, that is how it’s been and that’s my expectation.”

Ole Miss head coach Pete Golding looks across the table at Georgia head coach Kirby Smart during a press conference for the Sugar Bowl and College Football Playoff quarterfinals at the Sheraton New Orleans Hotel in New Orleans, La., on Wednesday, Dec. 31, 2025.

This answer mirrors Carter’s in the sense that there’s ultimately no new information about the situation. It seems the coaches’ decision rests in their hands — and those of LSU head coach Lane Kiffin and the Tigers’ top brass.

It seems Kiffin and co. didn’t expect Ole Miss to make it this far into the playoffs. If they had lost to Georgia on Thursday night, the staffers working for both LSU and Ole Miss could have simply made their way to Baton Rouge after the game and assumed their new roles. That’s especially important given that the NCAA Transfer Portal opened Friday morning, and that LSU desperately needs to recruit well over the next couple of weeks. If these staffers are still unable to fully commit to LSU’s recruiting efforts over this stretch, it could spell real trouble for the Tigers’ 2026 season.

It remains unclear where these staffers will be for next week’s game.
