On3 analyst's one word to describe Texas A&M QB Marcel Reed

Texas A&M's chances of making it back to the College Football Playoff will, as I've stated multiple times this offseason, hinge on redshirt junior quarterback Marcel Reed taking the proverbial "next step" in his development after passing for a career-high 3,169 yards, 25 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions last fall.

After offensive coordinator and 2025 Broyles Award nominee Collin Klein departed after two seasons as the play-caller to take over as Kansas State's head coach, veteran wide receivers coach Holmon Wiggins was promoted as the program's new OC, despite his lack of play-calling experience.

Combined with Joey Lynch's elevation as the new quarterbacks coach, Marcel Reed is in prime position to not just improve as a pocket passer, but eliminate the "mental mistakes" that led to last season's four interceptions in the Aggies' only two losses to Texas at the end of the regular season, and Miami in the first round of the CFP.

Against top-35-ranked defenses last season, Reed threw just six touchdowns and eight of his twelve interceptions on the year, while completing just 59% of his passes, making him one of the more high-variance quarterbacks in the SEC, possessing elite potential, but lacking the consistency to be counted on week after week.

Last week, On3's Andy Staples was asked by Crain & Cone how he would describe Marcel Reed in one word, choosing "unpredictable," compared to more flattering terms for the other SEC signal-callers mentioned, outside of "make-or-break" for South Carolina QB LaNorris Sellers.

Still, Texas A&M's deep wide receiver rotation, led by Mario Craver, Ashton Bethel-Roman, Terry Bussey, and, now, Alabama transfer wideout Isaiah Horton, who brings much-needed size at 6'4", Reed will be in prime position to match his 2025 passing numbers, but with four new starters along the offensive line, it remains to be seen if the pass protection holds up.
