Opening Odds: A Top 15 showdown in Oxford

Suddenly, the eyes of the college football world are on Mizzou.

The Ole Miss road trip was probably viewed differently headed into this season. You would’ve been forgiven for thinking the Tigers might be carrying two losses into their Oxford visit. But now that the Tigers are an outsider College Football Playoff contender, the date with the Rebels looms a bit larger.

Both Mizzou and Ole Miss are fighting for their playoff lives at this point in the season. Ole Miss’s resume is looking pretty weak these days — a home win over LSU isn’t worth much at this point, whereas a road loss to Florida has been sufficiently devalued — whereas Mizzou’s is still lacking a marquee win. Sure, beating Florida was nice when they were a Top 10 opponent. But now Florida has tumbled out of the rankings altogether.

If Mizzou wants to prove to the committee that they’re a team worth taking seriously. They need a no-doubter type of win… say, beating a Top 10 opponent on the road? Ole Miss may not be the SEC challenger it looked like a few weeks ago, but they’ve still got a Heisman contender at QB leading one of the country’s best offenses. It’ll be a fun match up with Mizzou’s defense, which has dominated two straight games.

FanDuel still sees the home team as the understandable favorite, giving Ole Miss 6.5 points to open the line. But it’s also predicted to be a shootout at a 60.5 over-under, which leads the SEC predictions for the week. And anything can happen in a shootout.
