Under head coach Dan Lanning, the Oregon Ducks have quietly become one of the top transfer destinations in the country, with a number of transfers ranging from safety Dillon Thieneman, running back Noah Whittington, defensive tackle Bear Alexander and wide receiver Malik Benson, among others, having success and elevating themselves once they’ve gotten immersed in the program.
And while the Ducks are in the midst of prepping for their College Football Playoff first-round matchup against the James Madison Dukes, transfer portal season is already underway — meaning soon-to-be portal entrees (the transfer portal officially opens on Jan. 2) are already poking around as to what school they’ll land at.
Oregon has already been floated as a potential destination for transfer quarterbacks Dylan Raiola (formerly of Nebraska) and Sam Leavitt (Arizona State), but a defensive player is the latest to reportedly have interest in joining the Ducks.
“Sources have told On3 to keep an eye on Alabama, Oregon and Georgia at this point for Devan Thompkins,” Pete Nakos reported.
Thompkins was a key cog along the Trojans‘ defensive line this season, serving as a defensive tackle on the interior as he posted 31 total tackles (18 solo), three sacks, two passes defensed and a forced fumble. The redshirt junior spent all four of his seasons at USC, finishing with career totals of 56 tackles, 4.5 sacks and five passes defensed.
The 6-foot-5, 290-pounder joined the Trojans as a three-star recruit from Stockton, CA, and redshirted his freshman season as he developed both his frame and his on-field skills. Thompkins finally secured a starting role in 2025 and had an impressive season and is now looking elsewhere to finish his career.
A potential connection that the Ducks could have with Thompkins is in fellow defensive tackle Alexander, who played with Thompkins in 2023 and 2024 in the same position room. Since coming to Oregon, Alexander has thrived, turning himself into a potential Day 2 pick in the NFL Draft. Despite that, Alexander announced that he’ll return for the 2026 season, showing how much he values the Oregon program.
There is no timetable for when Thompkins will announce his commitment, but Lanning and his staff could certainly benefit from adding another talented and accomplished presence on the interior of the defense.
