The Oregon Ducks have been recruiting well, but there’s a chance they never stood a chance of landing Jett Harrison.
The Oregon Ducks failed to land 5-star wide receiver Jet Harrison, the No. 1 recruit in the 2028 recruiting class and brother of former Ohio State star Marvin Harrison Jr. Harrison, the son of Hall of Fame wide receiver Marvin Harrison Sr., committed to Ohio State over Oregon and Miami to continue the family legacy in Columbus.
While Oregon finished in Harrison’s top three, the reality is the Ducks likely never had a real shot at landing him.
Ohio State was always the destination
Harrison only took three visits, and all three were to Ohio State. That alone tells you everything you need to know about where this recruitment was always headed. His brother went to Ohio State just a few years ago, and the Buckeyes have built a reputation as the premier wide receiver factory in college football. Jeremiah Smith is there now, and the program has produced elite talents like Chris Olave, Garrett Wilson, and Carnell Tate over the years.
Ohio State is the best school in the country for wide receivers. When you look at that track record and pair it with the Harrison family connection, Oregon finishing in the top three feels more like a courtesy than a legitimate battle.
What makes Harrison special
Harrison is from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and scouts have compared him to Minnesota Vikings wide receiver Justin Jefferson. The comparison makes sense. Harrison has the same type of size, route-running ability, and outstanding ball skills that make Jefferson one of the best receivers in the NFL. No one is saying he will be Jefferson. But, he does show shades of the same game. That kind of evaluation for a high school prospect speaks volumes about his ceiling.
Penn State also factored into his recruitment, likely because of the proximity to his hometown. But that was never a serious threat to Ohio State’s position at the top.
Where this leaves Oregon
The Ducks made a strong push to be included in Harrison’s final group. And, getting into the top three of the No. 1 overall recruit is noteworthy. But there was no realistic path to landing him once you considered the family ties and the history of visits. Oregon will have to continue building its receiver pipeline through other avenues in the 2028 class.
Ohio State, meanwhile, adds another elite pass catcher to a program that simply does not stop producing them. Jett Harrison is set to be a Buckeye, and it probably never should have been in doubt.
