With Dan Lanning at the helm, the Oregon Ducks have been one of the best recruiting machines in the college football world, stacking up top-five classes just about every year now. However, their elite recruiting has not always lent itself to the quarterback position, where the highest-rated prospect they’ve landed from the high school ranks is 4-star Akili Smith Jr., the No. 201 player in the 2025 class.

While Oregon has done just fine at the position, led by elite transfers like Bo Nix, Dillon Gabriel, and Dante Moore, it appears they’ve now set their sights on a high school prospect they’re shoving all their chips on.

That prospect is 5-star quarterback Will Mencl, the No. 1-rated QB in the 2027 class, per On3. This past week, the Ducks picked up multiple predictions that they will land a commitment from Mencl, who will officially announce his college destination on Wednesday night.

On Monday, On3’s Greg Biggins placed a prediction for Mencl to pick Oregon, and the 247Sports Recruiting Staff placed a similar projection on Tuesday morning. Mencl will choose between Oregon, the Penn State Nittany Lions, and the Auburn Tigers.

Standing at 6-foot-3, 200 pounds, Mencl is rated as the No. 13 overall player in the 2027 class, per 247Sports. He will announce his commitment on YouTube at 4:30 p.m. PT.
