A national championship title remains the primary goal for the Oregon Ducks and head coach Dan Lanning heading into the 2026 college football season.

Over the past two years, the Ducks have failed to reach the promised land despite posting a 26-3 record during the stretch. However, Lanning may have revealed a key reason why Oregon has yet to win a National Championship during the 2026 Big Ten media days this week.

When discussing his current roster during the Big Ten media days on Wednesday, Lanning told reporters that he feels like this year's team "has a lot of experience returning" on the roster.

"Obviously, we have some great returning players that have been big contributors to our program," Lanning said at Big Ten media days. "One thing that I recognize is last year I felt like we had a team that had a ton of talent. This year, I feel like we have a team that has a lot of experience returning. A lot of those young players that played are now guys that have also had great experience, and I'm excited to see what that looks like.”

Oregon's Key Veterans For 2026 Season

Last year, Oregon's roster featured plenty of talented playmakers on both sides of the ball, including quarterback Dante Moore, tight end Kenyon Sadiq, and safety Dillon Thieneman. However, despite the ample number of high-end players on the roster, Lanning and the Ducks were unable to step up when it mattered in 2025.

In the program's semifinal matchup against the Indiana Hoosiers, the offense failed to manufacture any sort of production. Moore began the contest with a fatal turnover, which caused the eventual spiral for the Ducks' offense. The polished quarterback finished the contest completing 285 passing yards, two touchdowns, and one interception, but his efforts would go unnoticed in the shocking 56-22 defeat.

Now, with plenty of starters from last season set to return in 2026, Oregon's veteran-heavy lineup is equipped to tackle primetime matchups.

On offense, the combination of wideouts Dakorien Moore and Evan Stewart, along with tight end Jamari Johnson, will be the key to Oregon's passing attack this year. In addition to the plethora of pass catchers, the Ducks' one-two punch of running backs in Jordon Davison and Dierre Hill Jr. will carry the load of the ground game.

The defense, on the other hand, has a stout front four unit led by Washington and EDGE Matayo Uiagalelei, who were the main catalysts from last year's starting lineup. Behind the front seven is newcomer Koi Perich, who comes from the Minnesota Golden Gophers.
