As the day approaches when the No. 5 Oregon Ducks faceoff with the No. 1 Indiana Hoosiers for a second time, some unusual wagers are being placed.

The Ducks are looking to advance to the national championship game, but first they must win at the Peach Bowl in Atlanta against a team whose quarterback brought the Indiana University program its first-ever Heisman Trophy and handed Oregon its only loss this season.

Ahead of the Ducks' first-ever appearance in the Peach Bowl, the secretaries of state for Oregon and Indiana have placed a friendly wager.

Oregon Secretary of State Tobias Read has promised to send Indiana Secretary of State Diego Morales some of the country's finest hazelnuts, Oregon's state nut, if the Hoosiers prevail. If Oregon wins, Morales has put Indiana popcorn on the line, the state's official snack.

“As a proud IU alum, I couldn’t be more excited to watch our undefeated Hoosier team take the national stage. This program has been built one win at a time — through a relentless commitment to excellence. The Peach Bowl will be no different. Oregon’s a great opponent, but I’ll be happy to enjoy some hazelnuts once the Hoosiers handle business,” said Morales.

If Read had promised to send filberts, would Morales know what he was offering?

“I have one message for Secretary Morales and his Hoosiers: Bring. It. On. From Autzen to Atlanta, our Ducks play with heart, discipline, and pride. We’re ready for this shot at redemption. I’m looking forward to cheering on another Oregon win and snacking on that famous Indiana popcorn. Sco Ducks,” Read said.

The game is at 4:30 p.m. Pacific on Jan. 9 and will air on ESPN. Though the outcome will determine who gets a shot at bringing home the golden trophy, the officials' wager may have some people in Oregon wondering, "Why don't we have an official state snack?"
