The Oregon Ducks were clearly furious after a frustrating 39-31 loss to the Oklahoma State Cowboys last week. They took out every single ounce of that frustration on an outmatched Portland State Vikings team on Friday night at Autzen Stadium.
Head coach Dan Lanning had his squad firing on all cylinders from the opening kickoff. Oregon jumped to a 28-0 lead in the first quarter and dropped 49 unanswered points on Portland State before halftime, effectively putting the contest away before the band took the field.
Starting quarterback Dante Moore set the tone early, throwing four touchdown passes with only four incompletions on the night. When Moore took his seat, backup quarterback Dylan Raiola kept the gas pedal down. Raiola completed all 11 of his pass attempts for 124 yards and three touchdowns. Wide receiver Messiah Hampton reeled in two of those scoring catches as Oregon piled up 723 yards of total offense, scoring touchdowns on 12 of its 13 possessions.

The Ducks’ defense came in with plenty to prove after surrendering over 500 yards last weekend. They responded in dramatic fashion by holding Portland State to just 103 total yards and a staggering two rushing yards. Safety Jett Washington picked off Portland State quarterback Gabe Downing twice, anchoring a dominant defensive unit that forced three total interceptions and pitched a clean shutout.
With the game well out of reach, Oregon used the entire second half to evaluate its promising young depth. Running back Tradarian Ball rushed five times for 37 yards and scored his first career college touchdown, while running back Brandon Smith added his own first touchdown as a Duck. Freshman quarterback Akili Smith Jr. even made his collegiate debut late, completing his first pass with authority.
The historical 84-0 blowout victory marked Lanning’s 50th win as head coach at Oregon. While beating up on an FCS opponent won’t entirely erase last week’s non-conference loss, this ruthless response proved that the Ducks are still a serious contender.
