The quarterback recruiting dominoes are beginning to fall in the 2027 class, and the Oregon Ducks could be the biggest beneficiary when all is said and done.
Over the weekend, four-star quarterback Israel Abrams announced his commitment to the Miami Hurricanes, taking them out of the race for other quarterbacks in the class that the Ducks are competing for. While the Ducks recently had a great visit with four-star Jake Nawrot, Oregon has long been recruiting five-star Will Mencl, who is the top quarterback in the 2027 class, according to Rivals.
With Abrams heading to Miami, that presumably knocks the Hurricanes off of Mencl’s list of programs he could commit to. The Ducks have been aggressively recruiting Mencl for a long time and will get him back in Eugene later this month, and the Ducks appear to be the front-runner in his recruitment, according to Rivals’ Adam Gorney.
“Knock (Miami) off the list for Will Mencl and you’re essentially down to three: Oregon, Auburn and Penn State,” Gorney said. “Auburn and Penn State are obviously great programs and have developed great quarterbacks over there for years. But, both have new coaching staffs, both are far from home … I think Israel Abrams’ commitment to Miami knocks them off the list for Mencl, which only favors Oregon as the leader there.”

Mencl visited Penn State last weekend, but it still appears that the Ducks have the upper hand, with Auburn posing the biggest threat. Getting Mencl back on campus later this month will be huge for the Ducks before a potential commitment.
Mencl is the No. 4 overall recruit and No. 1 quarterback in the country, according to Rivals, standing at 6-foot-3 and 205 pounds. He is a capable runner and passer who would be the crown jewel of Oregon’s 2027 class, which is starting to trend back in the right direction after securing a commitment from four-star edge rusher Rashad Streets over the weekend.
