Oregon vs. James Madison in CFP first round: Get ready for Playoff matchup

The College Football Playoff bracket was revealed Sunday, Dec. 7. The first round games will be on campus sites.

Oregon's only loss this season is against the CFP's No. 1 team Indiana. While James Madison punched its ticket to the playoff with a little help from Duke. JMU won the Sun Belt Championship against Troy and needed Duke to win the ACC Championship against Virginia, and the Blue Devils obliged. JMU entered Championship Week No. 25 in the rankings, and a five-loss Duke team winning Saturday meant the five top-ranked conference champions wouldn't include the ACC.

Here's a quick look at what you need to know for No. 5 Oregon (11-1) vs. No. 12 James Madison (12-1):

OREGON DUCKS FOOTBALL

Stat leaders:

  • Leading passer: QB Dante Moore, 2,733 yards with 24 touchdowns and six interceptions
  • Leading rusher: RB Noah Whittington, 774 rushing yards and six rushing touchdowns
  • Leading receiver: WR Malik Benson, 526 receiving yards and four receiving touchdowns on 31 receptions
  • Top defender: LB Bryce Boettcher, 103 total tackles, three broken-up passes, one forced fumble, one interception and a sack. An honorable Mention is LB Teitum Tuioti with seven sacks. 

How they got here:

  • Schedule: 11-1 overall, 8-1 in Big Ten play
  • Big wins: at then-No. 3 Penn State, at No. 20 Iowa and vs. No. 15 USC

Playoff history:

  • Have they been here before? Yes, Oregon is making its third appearance in the College Football Playoff. The Ducks first made the CFP in 2015 and then last year as the No. 1 seed in last year’s bracket. Dan Lanning’s squad will look to last longer in the field this time around though, as it was a one-and-done for Oregon last year following a CFP quarterfinal loss to Ohio State in the Rose Bowl. 

JAMES MADISON DUKES FOOTBALL

Stat leaders:

  • Leading passer: QB Alonza Barnett III, 2,533 yards with 21 touchdowns and eight interceptions
  • Leading rusher: RB Wayne Knight, 1,263 rushing yards and nine rushing touchdowns on 190 carries
  • Leading receiver: WR Landon Ellis, 541 receiving yards and five receiving touchdowns on 33 receptions
  • Top defender: LB Trent Hendrick, 96 total tackles, three sacks, two broken-up passes and a forced fumble

How they got here:

  • Schedule: 12-1 overall, 8-0 in Sun Belt play
  • Big wins: vs. Old Dominion, vs. Troy (Sun Belt championship game)

Playoff history:

  • Have they been here before? No, James Madison is making its first appearance in the College Football Playoff. The Dukes were named to the field because of Duke’s win over Virginia in the ACC championship game.
