After closing out non-conference play with a dominating 58-7 win over Howard, Rutgers will resume conference play this Saturday at 8 p.m. in the Scarlet Knights’ blackout homecoming game against Indiana. This is Indiana’s first road game of the season and their first trip to Piscataway under Curt Cignetti. As is tradition here at OnTheBanks, the staff will try to guess the score of the game and give context as to why they think that way.

Last week, Northwestern hung in tough against Indiana and made them earn a 29-23 win, which likely will be a lesson for the Hoosiers not to take opponents lightly. With that in mind, the odds of Indiana looking past their opponent in this game are very slim, as they will likely want to make a statement that last week was just a fluke.
While Rutgers has stars like KJ Duff and Antwan Raymond who could give the Hoosiers issues, the quarterback and defensive quality of both teams seem to lean heavily towards Indiana. The Knights could have a shot at staying competitive if Lonergan can keep the turnovers under control, which has been a big if for him against FBS opponents this season. On the same coin, the defense will have to find a way to contain a two-headed rushing attack as Turbo Richard is expected to be good to go this week.
The game won’t be as ugly as some might think. Indiana hasn’t looked the same as last year, and Rutgers still has superstars who could give them problems. With the betting line opening at 23.5 points, the Hoosiers will cover, but just barely.

We have finally arrived at the highly-anticipated homecoming blackout game against the defending national champion Indiana Hoosiers. Despite IU struggling to put away a pesky Northwestern team last Friday night, they are still a much more put-together and talented team than the Scarlet Knights have been, especially this season.
Boston College transfer running back Turbo Richard is probable for the game, while breakout star Lee Beebe had 203 yards last week against the Wildcats is listed as questionable as of yesterday’s injury report. Even still, Indiana has a high-powered passing attack, with two of the top receivers in the country squaring off in KJ Duff and Charlie Becker.
The Hoosiers have won or tied the turnover margin for 28 straight weeks and have won 20 straight games, dating back throughout their undefeated national championship run in 2025. Although this team is not quite at that level, they should be able to roll over Rutgers despite the insane atmosphere expected Saturday night.
Expect some points from the Knights behind KJ Duff and Antwan Raymond, but with Dylan Lonergan’s propensity for throwing interceptions and the Hoosiers unfortunately having a good defense (unlike USC), Indiana will not let Rutgers come too close and pulls away in the second half as the Knights can’t match scores.

When we did win total predictions, Indiana wasn’t one of the six wins I originally thought RU would get.
Still isn’t.!
Caveat: Except for Howard (woop-de-damn-doo!) I haven’t made a correct prediction all season!
I hope there’s a great crowd Saturday night; it’s Homecoming, the Blackout game. Yes, the defending-national-champions-who-may-not-be-as-good-as-they-were-last-year are the opponent. My guess? A pretty honest 49,000 attendees. Electric vibe or, perhaps, an “insane” atmosphere as Arnav says. Should be fun.
The Hoosiers might not be as good as they were last year, but they are a better team overall than Rutgers. And, more importantly, they have a better coach; he’ll get D1 win No. 98 this week (in year 10, BTW). The Knights will be better than they were the first two weeks of the season….but so will IU. Competitive? Maybe. Not a blowout? More likely. But, the Knights will still go into the bye week at 1-4, looking to get things right for maybe win number 2 against Maryland in two weeks.

Indiana arrives as the No. 6 team in the country with the nation’s longest winning streak at 20 games, and as the defending national champion. ESPN gives Indiana a 96.6% chance of winning. Vegas has the Scarlet Knights as a 23.5-point underdog.
The case for Rutgers is thinner than the case against, but it exists. Rutgers scored 35 on USC in a seven-point loss. Indiana needed everything to get past Northwestern 29-23 last week. Rutgers has won the last three meetings, 38-3 in 2021, 24-17 in 2022 and 31-14 in 2023, even if that was a different Indiana.
If we consider their performances against Howard specifically, Indiana scored a net 55 points and Rutgers scored a net 51. The stars are aligning. Stars aside, the whole thing hinges on the football. Rutgers has turned it over 10 times in four games, and they can’t afford an 11th against a run defense allowing 65.8 yards a game, the best in the Big Ten. However, Clay Thevenin will likely cause that to change, thanks to a breakout performance last week.
Yet, it’s time. In 2006, Rutgers upset No. 3 Louisville at home for “Pandemonium in Piscataway.” In 2007, Rutgers upset No. 2 South Florida at home for “Pandemonium in Piscataway II.” In 2026, Rutgers WILL upset No. 6 Indiana for “Pandemonium in Piscataway III.”
Rutgers 27, Indiana 21
