The Oklahoma Soonersmade the College Football Playoff in 2025, mainly on the back of a very strong defense. The best part of that defense was the defensive line, which hounded opposing quarterbacks, and shut down opposing running backs. On Sunday, OU got great news for their defensive front in 2026, with the return of one of the key players in the trenches.

Defensive lineman David Stone announced his intentions to return to Oklahoma, according to reports. This was an expected move, as Stone was just a sophomore last year and is ineligible to enter the NFL Draft, but after a scare last offseason, it’s great to have Stone confirmed to be back in the boat in 2026.

Last year in April, during the spring transfer portal window that no longer exists, Stone surprisingly entered the portal on Easter weekend. The former five-star recruit was the gem of OU’s 2024 recruiting class, but he didn’t play much as a true freshman.

He suddenly entered the portal, which stunned Sooner Nation, but the group of head coach Brent Venables, defensive tackles coach Todd Bates, and general manager Jim Nagy convinced him to come back to Norman for 2025. Stone took his name out of the portal and returned to OU, then had a breakout season in 2025.

Stone had 49 total tackles and 2.5 sacks from his defensive tackle position this year, and he served as an excellent run-stuffer as well. OU’s defensive tackles were perhaps the strength of the entire team, and he was a big part of that unit’s success.

Stone’s return is an even bigger deal for the Sooners when you consider what they’re losing at DT this offseason. Seniors Damonic Williams and Gracen Halton have exhausted their collegiate eligibility, and Markus Strong has entered the transfer portal. Stone and Jayden Jackson are set to be the two starters at defensive tackle as juniors in 2026, but Oklahoma will be looking for depth and key rotational pieces in the portal over the next couple of weeks.

Retention is something Venables and his staff talk about all the time, especially when it comes to the transfer portal-NIL era of college football. The Sooners locked down one of their best underclassmen heading into 2026.
