A Pennsylvania woman who lost her job at Burger King after telling a customer “Free Palestine” has received a wave of financial and public support, with her online fundraiser approaching $250,000.
Arianna Hamilton, who worked at a Burger King in Breinigsville, Pennsylvania, was fired earlier this month following a viral interaction with Rami Feinstein, an Israeli-American musician. According to accounts of the exchange, Feinstein initially told Hamilton he was from New Jersey before identifying himself as Israeli. Hamilton responded by saying, “Free Palestine.”
Burger King confirmed Hamilton’s termination.
Hamilton later defended the comment in a video, saying she was exercising her right to free speech and that her intention was not to discriminate against or spread hatred toward anyone. She said she wanted to call attention to the humanitarian situation in Gaza.
After losing her job, Hamilton launched a GoFundMe campaign titled “Support Arianna After Job Loss for Free Speech.” The fundraiser initially sought $140,000 to help Hamilton cover rent, utilities, groceries and other basic expenses while she looked for new employment.
The campaign quickly surpassed that goal. It had raised more than $240,000 from thousands of donors as of Friday, with the fundraising target subsequently increased to $250,000. Hamilton has said that money remaining after her basic needs are covered will be donated to Palestinian families.
The support has also extended beyond the United States.
Artists in Gaza have painted a mural honoring Hamilton, depicting her wearing her Burger King uniform and headset alongside a crossed-out Burger King logo and the words “Free Palestine.” Images and videos of the mural have circulated on social media, with supporters describing it as a gesture of solidarity with Hamilton and her public stance on Gaza.
The incident has generated sharply divided reactions. Supporters have praised Hamilton for using her voice to advocate for Palestinians, while critics have argued that the comment was inappropriate in a customer-service setting and questioned the amount of money raised following her termination.
For now, Hamilton has not publicly announced her next employment plans. Burger King has not issued additional comments beyond confirming that she was fired.
