A new era of Group of Six sports officially began on Wednesday.

The new-look Pac-12 was birthed on July 1, with former Mountain West teams Boise State, Colorado State, Fresno State, San Diego State and Utah State joining Oregon State and Washington State. Texas State also officially departed the Sun Belt to join the league, while Gonzaga — previously a member of the West Coast Conference — has joined the Pac-12 in a non-football capacity.

It's the headlining (though not the only) realignment move this offseason. Other minor moves include Louisiana Tech joining the Sun Belt to replace Texas State, while North Dakota State (Mountain West) and Sacramento State (MAC) are making the leap from the FCS to the FBS level.

The Pac-12 is expected by many to become the premier Group of Five conference as it pairs its two former Power Five members with Boise State, Fresno State and Utah State, which together account for every Mountain West championship since 2021.

The Pac-12, which has existed in some capacity for more than a century, died as we knew it in 2024, when all but two of its members left for other power conferences. However, after two seasons competing as an unofficial, two-team conference without a tie-in to the College Football Playoff, the league has been reborn and will likely be competitive for the guaranteed Group of Six playoff bid on an annual basis.
