Lane Kiffin and the LSU Tigers have taken college football by storm, and college football media is not happy about it. The Tigers have earned tight end Dae'Quan White and defensive tackle Zxavian Harris from the transfer portal, and Paul Finebaum discussed the situation on ESPN's First Take. "It's all about Lane Kiffin. No matter where he is in college football, norms get shattered, and we are all gobsmacked in total," said Finebaum.
"This is just the way that college football rolls these days," continued Finebaum. "Right now, everyone in the SEC isn't waiting to see what Kiffin says, or the Cleveland Browns do. They're waiting to see what the commissioner of the SEC says, and so far, he hasn't said anything." Commissioner Greg Sankey has already reminded every SEC school to follow eligibility rules, but the conference itself released this statement on Monday.
"College athletes, not former professional athletes, have been at the heart of the Southeastern Conference," said the SEC. "Individuals who choose to leave college athletics, sign professional playing contracts, and compete professionally should not then be permitted to return to college competition."
The LSU Tigers and Lane Kiffin are at the root of this statement. White and Harris both went undrafted, but they signed professional contracts with NFL teams. Harris signed with the New Orleans Saints, while White signed with the Cleveland Browns. White even appeared in an NFL preseason game. However, both requested their release so that they could transfer from Ole Miss to LSU.
Finebaum believed the SEC could go even further, pointing to the Brendan Sorsby situation as something the SEC could do. "Remember the [Brendan] Sorsby situation… everyone was outraged. And finally, the Big 12 came together and found a way out. That's what the SEC has to do," said Finebaum.
After Sorsby was originally deemed eligible to play for Texas Tech after being accused of betting on several games, several teams in the Big 12 threatened to boycott matchups against Texas Tech. Theoretically, the SEC could do the same, and with the SEC's statement, there could be some reprimanding action against LSU.
