Penalties play major factor in UNC's upset victory over TCU

The North Carolina Tar Heels delivered a massive football upset on Saturday in Ireland, beating TCU 15-10 and turning heads across the sports world.

Strong defense played the greatest role in UNC's (1-0) win, with guys like defensive lineman Xavier Lewis (five solo tackles, 4.5 TFLs) and Derek McDonald (11 total tackles) shining the brightest. North Carolina scored just enough first-half points, added three more on a third-quarter field goal and iced the game with timely plays late.

There's one particular area the Tar Heels had a major advantage over the Horned Frogs (0-1) in: discipline.

From his 24 season as head coach of the New England Patriots, Bill Belichick's teams rarely committed penalties. That continued on Saturday, with Belichick's Tar Heels committing just three penalties for 20 yards.

Sonny Dykes' TCU squad struggled keeping its composure, generating 11 penalties for 89 yards. The Horned Frogs continued committing costly penalties, with none more impactful than a pair of second-half mistakes.

Late in the second quarter, a bad snap sailed well over the head of Horned Frogs punter John Hoyet Chance, with the football dribbling into the end zone. UNC defenders rushed towards Chance, who then kicked the football behind the end zone. Thanks to that blunder, North Carolina took a 12-10 lead, one it never relinquished.

Also, UNC was the much more disciplined team today.

For over a decade, it’s seemed as though UNC hasn’t been able to get out of its own way- dumb penalties, mental mistakes, etc.

Today, outside of a couple mistakes, they were much more disciplined than TCU.
