Penn State adds former All-American to football staff

Penn State is bringing back members of the football family for the new era. In a week that saw former Nittany Lion Jordan Hill named the director of the Letterman's Club, Penn State has reportedly welcomed back former linebacker Michael Mauti to the football program as a new staff member.

Mauti is listed on Penn State's athletics website as a director of football engagement. Mauti was the Big Ten linebacker of the year and a first-team All-American in 2012. In addition to his performance on the field, Mauti was an emotional leader for the Nittany Lions in the first year of hefty NCAA sanctions being placed on the program. Mauti led the team as a key member, sticking with the program when given an opportunity to leave and play elsewhere as a free transfer. His vocal leadership came at an important time for the program, and he earned his spot among the Penn State greats as a result.

Mauti was a seventh-round draft pick of the Minnesota Vikings in 2013 and he spent five seasons in the NFL between the Vikings and New Orleans Saints. Mauti is the son of former Penn State wide receiver Rich Mauti, and his brother Patrick also played for the Nittany Lions.

Mauti joins a football staff that includes a number of former Penn State players such as Alan Zemaitis (director of talent acquisition), Jordan Lucas (assistant cornerbacks coach), Steven Gonzalez (recruiting assistant), Dan Connor (assistant linebackers coach), D'Anton Lynn (defensive coordinator), and Terry Smith (associate head coach and cornerbacks coach).
