Following the firings of James Franklin and Billy Napier, Penn State and Florida are viewed as two of the best jobs in college football despite their combined record of 6-12 this season.
Both programs are among the biggest brands in the sport, and according to 247Sports, have some of the biggest “NIL efforts” in college football as well. NIL Efforts is defined as the amount of “donations and contributions” by athletic boosters between 2005 and the end of the 2022 season.
Brad Crawford revealed that Penn State ranks No. 25 in its NIL efforts at $386 million, while Florida ranks No. 4 at $763 million. While both jobs are rich with history and have the resources, landing a high-profile candidate seems to be getting more difficult by the day.
Reported top targets for each program, like Matt Rhule at Nebraska or Jedd Fisch at Washington, have either received extensions or spoken against leaving their current role. While many people are operating under the assumption that these programs can poach a head coach from another major college football program, schools around the country are locking their coaches up.
The latest to do so, or at least be in the process of doing so, are the Louisville Cardinals with head coach Jeff Brohm. In his third year at the helm, Brohm has a 26-10 record overall and has the team sitting at 7-2 on the season and No. 20 in the College Football Playoff rankings.
Brohm has won every place he’s been, whether that be Western Kentucky or Purdue, which is why his name has been floated for both openings. However, according to On3’s Pete Nakos, Louisville is “working on a contract extension” to keep its former quarterback in town.
Brohm currently ranks No. 43 in college football in terms of salary at $5.9 million, but he’s clearly due for a big payday. As for Penn State and Florida, they may have to pivot again.
