The Penn State football season kicked off at Beaver Stadium in State College on Saturday with a 45-0 win over the Marshall Thunder Herd that included the debut of new starting quarterback Rocco Becht.
Becht followed head coach Matt Campbell from Iowa State to the Nittany Lions and had a strong debut with 13-of-18 completions for 271 yards and four touchdowns. Afterward, Campbell had praise for Becht, who was the Cyclones’ top quarterback three years running.
“Sometimes being a great quarterback is like being a great point guard,” Campbell said at a postgame press conference. “You gotta to be a great distributor of where the ball needs to go, and I thought he was outstanding today, I thought he was from the beginning, a lot of those he put us in really great positions to be successful.”

Becht said he felt 100 percent healthy again prior to the season and “back to his 2024 self,” when he threw for over 3,500 yards and 25 touchdowns to lead Iowa State. He spread the ball around on Saturday with nine Penn State players catching passes. Hollywood, Florida native Koby Howard led the way with six catches for 161 yards, including one touchdown for an average of 26.8 yards per reception.
The new Penn State offensive attack will face a tougher test on the road next week against the 1-0 Temple Owls, giving Becht a crack at an upset-minded in-state opponent. Becht’s Big Ten baptism will come at home on September 26 against the Wisconsin Badgers at Beaver Stadium, but for now, the Nittany Lions are 1-0 on the season and basking in the glow of a first-game shutout that went incredibly well on both sides of the ball.
