Penn State football team’s report card vs. Marshall

STATE COLLEGE – Grading the Penn State football team on its 45-0 win over Marshall Saturday at Beaver Stadium:

Quarterbacks

A: Rocco Becht looked composed in the pocket as he passed for 271 yards and a career-high four touchdowns.

Running backs

B: Four backs averaged about 4 yards a carry against a team that put eight or nine defenders in the box to stop the run.

Receivers

A: Koby Howard enjoyed a breakout with six catches for 161 yards and made a terrific route adjustment on his TD catch.

Offensive linemen

B: They protected the quarterbacks well, but struggled to create explosive runs against a stacked defensive front.

Defensive linemen

A: Caleb Bacon was credited with one sack and three of nine tackles for loss for Penn State, which also had seven QB hurries.

Linebackers

A: Tony Rojas was outstanding in his first game in almost a year, making seven tackles, two in the backfield and one sack.

Defensive backs

A: They covered and tackled well and limited Marshall to 3.7 yards per pass attempt and no completion longer than 14 yards.

Special teams

A: Zay Robinson looked like an exciting returner, and punter Nathan Tiyce averaged 43.2 yards in his first game for the Lions.

Coaches

A: The entire operation ran smoothly despite a new coaching staff and a roster with 62 newcomers, including 40 transfers.
