Penn State football's Ethan Grunkemeyer to enter the transfer portal

It appears Ethan Grunkemeyer’s time in a Penn State football uniform is coming to an end as the redshirt freshman is entering the transfer portal. The news was first reported by ESPN’s Pete Thamel.

Grunkemeyer took over for the injured Drew Allar as the starter after the Northwestern game, and after losing the first four games as QB1, he and the Nittany Lions won their final four games, including a 22-10 victory over Clemson in the Pinstripe Bowl.

Overall, Grunkemeyer completed 69.1% of his passers (123-178) for 1,339 yards and eight touchdowns to four interceptions. He also scored a rushing touchdown.

The Lewis Center, Ohio, native is the biggest name to enter the portal from Penn State. While this is a significant blow to the program, the possibility only grew once Matt Campbell‘s starting quarterback at Iowa State, Rocco Becht, announced he was entering the portal on Dec. 20.

Should Becht join the Nittany Lions as expected, he’ll likely enter the spring as the starter. He’ll be in competition with returner Jaxon Smolik — assuming he doesn’t enter the portal — and incoming prospects Peyton Falzone and Kase Evans, the latter whom originally signed with Iowa State before being released from his letter of intent.
