There’s been quite a development in Penn State football.

Before ever suiting up for the Nittany Lions, freshman quarterback Peyton Falzone has changed his position to become a tight end.

Head coach Matt Campbell understood what he was asking Falzone to do.

The now-former quarterback put in significant time to develop into a player who can run a college-level offense. He had even decommitted from Auburn to come to Happy Valley.

But sometimes, there’s always a silver lining somewhere.

As a recruit, Falzone’s calling card was his athleticism, totaling 700 rushing yards in 2024, while also running a 4.5 40-yard dash.

Those types of athletes don’t grow on trees.

Campbell knows what kind of athlete he has in the 6-foot-5 Falzone, and he doesn’t want to waste it.

"You're just like, man, this guy has got so much athleticism," Campbell said. "Is there more that we can do early on that he can maybe help our football team somehow? … I give him a lot of credit because he did what's best for the team. Obviously we left the quarterback piece open, but I think what's best for him and may be best for the football team right now was his ability to kind of see what he could do."

At the very least, Penn State has a player who could potentially fill a Taysom Hill-type role.

Hill, a former quarterback for BYU, carved out a 10-year career for the New Orleans Saints and became the Saints’ Swiss Army Knife, playing as a QB, tight end, and running back.

While it is way too early to start calling Falzone the second coming of Hill, it’s hard not to envision what possibilities he can bring to the field.

As of right now, Falzone would be buried on the depth chart behind current starter Rocco Becht, Alex Manske, Connor Barry, and Kase Evans.

Meanwhile, the Nittany Lions have also received quarterback commitments from the 2027 and 2028 classes.

The biggest question for Falzone is – what’s more important to him?

Because if it’s just getting on the field and playing ball, he may end up seeing the field much quicker than before.

For now, Falzone appears willing to do whatever is best for the team. What comes next could determine the direction of his Penn State career.
