Penn State freshman safety set to jump in transfer portal

The start of a new year means the NCAA transfer window is about to open. Penn State is among the schools expected to be somewhat busy in the transfer portal as new head coach Matt Campbell looks to fill some gaps on the roster amid the coaching change in Happy Valley after the school signed just two players in the early signing period of the recruiting calendar. While Campbell does have a number of commitments flipped from his Iowa State Class of 2026 set to come to Penn State, there will be more roster management to take care of as players on Penn State's roster continue to move forward wiht plans to enter the transfer portal.

One player reportedly set to jump in the transfer portal is freshman safety Braz Thomas. A member of Penn State's Class of 2025, Thomas did not get any playing time in 2025 and will look for a chance to get a fresh start somewhere else, as reported by Lions247.

Thomas is one of 14 players from Penn State's 2025 roster set to jump into the transfer portal. Thomas committed to Penn State over offers from Nebraska and West Virginia in the final stages of his recruiting process. Virginia Tech could be another option to watch as former Penn State head coach James Franklin could look to fill his roster at Virginia Tech with players he worked to recruit to Penn State.

The NCAA transfer portal opens from January 2 through January 16. During that time, any player in the transfer portal may explore their opportunities elsewhere and commit to a new school. Once the transfer window closes, no transfers will be possible until the following offseason. There is no more spring transfer window. The only exceptions are for schools in the College Football Playoff and if there is a coaching change at any school. Teams in the playoff have a transfer window of an additional five days following the final game played by that school.
