As Penn State works to assemble the new coaching staff for head coach Matt Campbell, another key member of the coaching staff is reportedly being retained. Justin Lustig is staying on the staff to be the team’s special teams coordinator, according to a report from Lions247.
Lustig was thought to be a possible departure to join James Franklin at Virginia Tech, but Penn State’s ability to keep him in Happy Valley will allow for some consistency with the special teams unit in the transition under the leadership of Campbell.
Penn State’s special teams were never truly stellar in terms of creating big punt or kickoff returns, although Nicholas Singleton did record a few special teams highlights during his time with Penn State, but the special teams unit was a pretty solid unit the past few seasons under Lustig.
Kicker Ryan Barker is coming off a Pinstripe Bowl performance with three successful field goals, two of them coming from beyond 40 yards in chilly winter conditions in Yankee Stadium. Punter Gabe Nwosu could consistently be counted on to help flip the field as well, and his powerful leg came in handy on kickoff duty.
With Lustig reportedly coming back, and with D’Anton Lynn making his way back to Penn State to fill the defensive coordinator role, Penn State will have its coordinator roles filled. Penn State still has some positional coaching spots to fill on the staff, including running backs, defensive line, and linebackers. Dan Connor is sill a name on the staff to watch as a possible holdover to keep the linebackers coach title.
