Penn State had been having a rough go of things in the quarterback recruiting department over the last couple of months. Although they earned a commitment from three-star signal caller Will Wood, he was likely one of their last resorts, as they were also in on four-star passers Peter Bourque and Will Mencl.

Both of those Class of 2027 quarterbacks chose not to join the Nittany Lions, with Bourque committing to Virginia Tech and Mencl heading to the Oregon Ducks. With Wood on board for 2027, the team turned their attention to the 2028 class, where they pursued four-star quarterback Trey Tagliaferri.

Penn State led a strong pursuit of the New Jersey native, but he eventually committed to Notre Dame last week, seemingly ending the Nittany Lions’ dreams of landing him. However, those dreams are now alive once again after Tagliaferri decommitted from the Fighting Irish in a stunning move that shook up the college football world.

We see more movement now than ever before in this new era of NIL and the adjusted transfer portal, but rarely does a prospect change his mind in less than a week. There hasn’t been any information as to what led to Tagliaferri changing his mind, but it now presents a golden opportunity for Penn State.

The school was considered one of the finalists for Tagliaferri before he made his initial decision and there’s no reason to think that won’t still be the case. We’ve heard numerous commits and recruits speak about how great the culture is at Penn State and how welcoming the environment is, so these sentiments could end up swaying the four-star prospect.

Penn State is close to home for him and they were his last visit before he committed to Notre Dame. Don’t be surprised to see the Nittany Lions take another aggressive run at Tagliaferri to try and lock up an early quarterback commit for the Class of 2028.
