Penn State still in play for 2027 offensive lineman

Amidst a lot of positive recruiting news, the Penn State Nittany Lions could still be in play for a 2027 offensive lineman who, interestingly enough, was a former commit.

According to a post from Nittany Lions Now, Layton Von Brandt has decided he will release his top schools by the end of the year. And from the reaction from Von Brandt, Penn State could be among the top candidates.

Von Brandt is the No. 5 OT in the 2027 cycle and No. 38 overall player in the country according to 247sports. He also had committed to Penn State before James Franklin’s firing. He reopened his recruitment and waited to see who would emerge as Franklin’s successor. When Campbell was hired, almost two days later, both were on the phone with each other.

“Seems like a very disciplined and principled coach that is about team success coming first over individual success,” Von Brandt said of Campbell. “That’s all something as an OL I can identify with as that’s basically what playing OL is all about.”

While the offensive line coach for the Nittany Lions has changed as well, Von Brandt is still open to any situation.

Von Brandt made it clear his recruitment is still open and he has yet to find a reason to rule out Penn State. But his next announcement with his top schools will tell for sure whether or not Penn State will still be in the running for his commitment in the Class of 2027.

Penn State currently has no commitments on the board for the Class of 2027, with the class quickly evaporating in the wake of the in-season coaching change in October, as expected. While some damage may have been done to the Class of 2026, there is still plenty of time to steer the ship around for the Class of 2027 for Campbell and his staff.
