This isn’t going well.
Michigan State has lost six straight, and that’s not the worst part of what’s going on.
In the final home game of the season – the Maryland date is in Detroit – and after being hit with three years of probation and a slew of vacated wins from the Mel Tucker era, just getting a win would be nice.
Penn State is also 0-6 in the Big Ten, and like MSU, it has to win out to get bowl eligible. First, it has to get its breath back after the gut-punch of a loss to Indiana last week.
On the plus side, with Nebraska and Rutgers to close, it can still make something out of the season.

Why Penn State Will Win
The Michigan State defense isn’t producing enough. It’s getting a bit better – it wasn’t bad in the losses to Minnesota and Michigan – but it doesn’t force takeaways, and meaningful third down stops are a rumor.
The Spartans have just one lonely takeaway in the last four games, and Penn State could use the break after turning it over seven times in the last four games.
The Nittany Lion offense needs Ethan Grunkemeyer to grip-it-and-rip-it like he did against Indiana. Michigan State’s defensive front won’t get to him enough to be a bother.

Going winless in Big Ten play is one thing, and the national title dreams went bye-bye weeks ago, but to lose a game like it just did against Indiana was the type of backbreaker that might have taken away the will. Now the program has to find it, or else.
It’s been the most mystifying part of the collapse – the running game isn’t there. The backs are NFL good, but they’re not getting any room.
The ground attack hit the five-yard-per-carry mark just once in Big Ten play, and Michigan State’s defensive front could desperately use the break.

Michigan State has had to sit and spin on the brutal loss to the Gophers for two weeks, but the time off also allowed them to finally rest up just a little bit.
Penn State is far more talented, and lost in all the pain and suffering is that five of the six losses were by one score. This could’ve gone way differently.
Michigan State’s losses have been mostly blowouts. The Spartans just don’t have the lines to hold up, but they’ll hang around until the end. Penn State will finally be on the right side of a decent game.
