Matt Campbell took over as head coach of the Penn State Nittany Lions in the offseason, and it started out well. The Nittany Lions won their first three games, but they have now lost three straight, facing off against three tougher opponents.
Despite the losses, Campbell is confident of Penn State's future and is already embracing the atmosphere in the Happy Valley and using it as a recruiting tactic compared to other top programs.
Campbell stated that Penn State is a college football town, and it's not like living in Austin, Texas, or Columbus, Ohio, where college football is part of the culture; Penn State is college football.
This is a strong message for potential recruits considering committing to the Nittany Lions over top teams like the Texas Longhorns and Ohio State Buckeyes. Penn State will look to land some great recruiting classes in the next couple of years to return to the College Football Playoff and become a contender to win a National Championship.
Campbell brought in a ton of talent through the transfer portal, but the Nittany Lions haven't been able to pick up wins and establish themselves as a team deserving of a Top 25 spot in the AP Poll in 2026.
However, Campbell has a great track record, going 72-55 during his time as the Iowa State Cyclones' head coach.
Penn State will aim for a stronger finish to the season and carry momentum into 2027. It starts Saturday, when the Nittany Lions take on the Michigan Wolverines.
On offense, Penn State will need quarterback Rocco Becht to play at a high level. Through six games, he completed 62.7 percent of his passes for 1,397 yards, 11 touchdowns, and three interceptions, while rushing for 52 yards and a touchdown.
They will also need to establish the run game, which has been very inconsistent. The Nittany Lions have tried many different options out of the backfield, as James Peoples has 232 yards and two touchdowns on 52 carries, Carson Hansen has 227 yards and three touchdowns on 57 carries, Quinton Martin Jr. has 158 yards and a touchdown on 29 carries, and Cam Wallace has 125 yards and two touchdowns on 22 carries.
Penn State will need the backfield to be impactful to have a chance at beating the Wolverines. The Nittany Lions have some quality talent on the roster, and if they finish the season strong, it could help Campbell land more recruits.
