Penn State's Matt Campbell Has No Reason for Struggles Against Temple

Looking at what Penn State did against the Temple Owls on Saturday in Philadelphia, winning 27-9, it's fair to say there's a lot left to be desired. 

Penn State should have won this game by a lot more, and it wasn't able to do so because of its inability to convert in the red zone early in the game. 

Had Penn State converted some of those opportunities early on against Temple, we probably would have been looking at about a 30-point win. Instead, Penn State only won 27-9, and frankly, it just felt like an old Penn State team under James Franklin. 

The offense was boring, the pass game was fine, but it felt like there was a lot more to be desired, and ultimately, the Nittany Lions kind of played down to their competition.

There are a lot of promising things to take away from this, however, and the simple fact of the matter here is that Penn State can be a lot better. 

If there's one thing to look forward to, it's the fact that head coach Matt Campbell is not going to be content with wins like this. Instead of coming out and saying his team got a win and he's okay with that, he understands that his offense needs to be a lot better.

“I don't think there's any explanation other than we didn't play very well. We didn't play very well in the first half or the first quarter of the game offensively.

“You go back and you look at those three runs down in the red zone, they're all there. The first one, it's a bad run. The second one, we get beat on the inside. And the third one, we're off by an inch. But it's a game of inches, and especially when you play on the road, you have to have great execution. We didn't do it. And then defensively, we give up two 40-yard plays because of lack of detail,” Campbell said, per 247.

The offense is always going to be the biggest question at Penn State, for whatever reason. In years past, even with James Franklin and some big-time stars on that side of the football, it never felt like this offense was great. 

Defense is typically the focus for the Nittany Lions, and it's fine if that continues. However, saying the offense doesn't need to improve would be unfair, as Penn State has a lot to work on in that regard.
