The Pete Golding era is off and running in Oxford, Mississippi. Golding took over for Lane Kiffin following the regular season when Kiffin accepted the head coaching position at LSU. Previously, Golding served as the defensive coordinator.
As head coach, Golding guided Ole Miss to College Football Playoff victories over the Tulane Green Wave and the Georgia Bulldogs. However, the Rebels’ journey ended with a 31-27 loss against the Miami Hurricanes in the semifinals due to a late touchdown.
Golding faces an uncertain offseason, particularly at the quarterback position. Last season’s opening-game starting quarterback, Austin Simmons, decided to transfer to the Missouri Tigers. Trinidad Chambliss, who guided Ole Miss to the playoffs after Simmons’ early-season injury, was denied a waiver by the NCAA to play another season. However, Ole Miss plans to appeal this decision.
That’s why it was major news when former Auburn Tigers quarterback Deuce Knight announced his commitment to the Rebels, per On3/Rivals analyst Hayes Fawcett. Knight, a former five-star recruit, had an impressive true freshman season in limited action, throwing for 259 yards and two touchdowns, and also rushing for 178 yards and four touchdowns in just two games.

Knight’s commitment gives Ole Miss a much-needed infusion of talent and upside at the most important position as the Golding era continues in Oxford. With Simmons transferring to Missouri and Chambliss awaiting an appeal after his waiver was denied, the Rebels were facing a thin quarterback outlook entering the offseason.
Knight’s limited action at Auburn showcased why he was regarded as one of the top quarterback prospects in the country. His ability to impact the game both through the air and on the ground fits well with an Ole Miss offense that will be looking for versatility and explosiveness as it reshapes its identity post–Kiffin.
As Golding looks to stabilize the roster after a playoff run and a narrow semifinal loss to Miami, landing a quarterback with Knight’s pedigree provides flexibility moving forward. Whether he starts immediately or competes for the role, Knight represents a foundational piece as Ole Miss prepares for its next chapter in the SEC.
